Conclusion
Equipment improvement happens in Akashi's Arsenal (改修工廠, Kaishū Kōshō). With Akashi as your 1st-fleet flagship you spend improvement materials (改修資材, “screws”), development materials and resources to add stars (★) to a piece of gear. The stat screen doesn't change, but the bonus is applied in battle.
From the wiki's data, the low stars are the cheap, safe part: ★0 to ★4 never fails, while costs rise and success rates drop after that. For a newer player, spreading a few stars across commonly used guns and torpedoes looks like better value than pushing one item to ★max.
How to Open Akashi's Arsenal
- 1Get the repair ship Akashi (明石). See How to Get Akashi.
- 2Clear the early quest Prepare the Improvement Arsenal (改修工廠を準備せよ!) — it gives 5 screws. It appears after the seaplane tender deployment quest.
- 3Put Akashi (or Akashi Kai) as the flagship of the 1st fleet.
- 4Enter from the home port: the Arsenal button appears next to the Factory (工廠) button. You can also click the crane at the bottom left of second-level screens such as Organize.
What You Can Improve, and When
- The list of improvable gear depends on the day of the week (it changes at 0:00 JST) and on your 2nd ship. With a matching 2nd ship, some menu items are replaced with special improvements.
- Gear equipped on a ship shows in the list with an “unequip” button. Gear on ships away on expeditions, and gear in Land-Based Air Squadrons, can't be used.
- Locked gear can be improved. It only needs to be unlocked when upgrading it into a different item at ★max.
- Higher stars can also require an unimproved copy of an item as material. It's consumed whether the attempt succeeds or not, so it can't be locked or starred.
Success Rates
| Step | Akashi | Akashi Kai |
|---|---|---|
| ★0 → ★4 | 100% | 100% |
| ★4 → ★5 | 95% | 100% |
| ★5 → ★6 | 90% | 95% |
| ★6 → ★7 | 80% | 90% |
| ★7 → ★8 | 77% | 82% |
| ★8 → ★9 | 72% | 77% |
| ★9 → ★max | 60% | 67% |
| ★max → upgrade | 50% | 62% |
Rates as listed on the wiki (from analysis and player testing). On a failure, development materials, screws and material equipment are still spent, but the item you're improving is not lost. You can pay extra materials to guarantee success.
Where Screws Come From
| Source | Roughly how many |
|---|---|
| Daily quests (incl. the daily improvement quest) | About 2 a day |
| Weekly quests | About 12 a week |
| Monthly quests | About 14 a month |
| Quarterly quests | About 24 a quarter |
| Medals | 4 screws per medal (or a blueprint for 4 medals) |
| Item shop | 10 for 700 points |
Quest totals are the wiki's sums for recurring quests; one-off quests and events add more. Screws cap at 3,000.
FAQ
The stats didn't go up after improving. Did it work?
Yes. Improvement doesn't change the displayed stats; the bonus is applied in battle calculations.
Can I remove stars if I improved the wrong item?
Since April 2026 there's a reset option, but it uses an Arsenal Resource item and can fail — so it's still better to double-check before improving.
Is there a daily quest for this?
Yes — one improvement a day counts toward a daily quest. See Daily Quests.
Does Akashi's level matter?
The wiki doesn't find an effect from Akashi's level or fatigue; what matters is Akashi vs Akashi Kai.
