Fatigue and Sparkling Explained

Orange and red faces, sparkles, and the hidden morale number behind them — what each one does, how long recovery takes, and how to sparkle a ship on purpose.

01

Conclusion

Orange or red face = tired. Tired ships miss more, get hit more, and can make an expedition fail. Leave them alone for a while (about 20–30 minutes) before sortieing again.

Sparkles = high morale. Sparkling ships hit and dodge better, and a fully sparkled fleet can turn expeditions into great successes.

The fastest way to sparkle a ship: send it to 1-1 as flagship and get it MVP in both battles of one sortie.

An analysis-based guide: this guide is based on our analysis of the morale (condition) data published on the Japanese KanColle wiki. It describes what the data shows and is not a guarantee of results.
02

What the Faces Mean

Every ship has a hidden morale value from 0 to 100 (コンディション値, Kondishon-chi). You can't see the number, but the ship's portrait shows which band it's in.

MoraleWhat you seeJapanese term (romaji)State
50–100Sparkles (more sparkles at higher values)戦意高揚 (Sen'i Kōyō), キラキラ (Kirakira)High morale
40–49Nothing—Normal
30–39Nothing (the Mamiya “給” icon blinks if you own one)—Slightly tired
20–29Orange face疲労 (Hirō)Tired
0–19Red face疲労困憊 (Hirō Konpai)Exhausted

Morale only updates when you return to the home port (母港, Bokō) screen, so check again after going back there.

03

What Morale Does

  • Sparkling: better accuracy and evasion in battle; raises the chance of an expedition great success (1.5× resources); a sparkling flagship raises the chance that a support fleet shows up.
  • Tired (around 32 and below): measured drops in accuracy and evasion.
  • Expeditions: if any ship is at orange or red (29 or below) when you collect the result, the expedition fails.
  • Red (19 and below): the game's protection against sinking still works, but when it kicks in it leaves the ship at heavy damage, so red ships end up heavily damaged far more often.

How Morale Goes Up and Down

EventChange
New ship (drop or construction)Starts at 40
Time passing+3 every 3 minutes, up to 49 (never sparkles on its own)
Coming back from a sortie−15 (−30 if the ship is already below 30)
Each daytime battle−3 (−9 if below 30)
Each night battle−2
MVP+10
Being flagship+3 per battle (on S to C ranks)
Battle rankS +4, A +3, B +2, C +1, D/E 0
Coming back from an expedition−3
Exercises (PvP)0 on return (battles still apply the −3)
Repair in the dockAnything below 40 is set to 40 when repair finishes
RemodelSet to 40 (removes sparkle too)
Mamiya (間宮)Raises to 50 (or 40)
Irako (伊良湖)0–40 → 65; 41 and up → +25

Rough recovery times: once a red face disappears, about 30 more minutes to fully recover; after an orange face disappears, about 21 minutes; after the Mamiya icon stops blinking, about 9 minutes.

05

How to Sparkle a Ship

  1. 1Let the ship recover fully first (wait about 9 minutes after the Mamiya icon stops blinking) — otherwise it may not reach the sparkle band.
  2. 2Put it as flagship and send it to 1-1 (鎮守府正面海域, Chinjufu Shōmen Kaiiki) alone, or with escorts that attack after it and won't steal MVP.
  3. 3Get the flagship MVP in both battles of one sortie. That nets roughly +12 after the −15 for returning, enough to sparkle.
  4. 4Repeat up to three times to push morale toward 85, the most a sortie can give. Retreating after the first battle gives no sparkle.
Other ways: an S rank in an exercise decided in the daytime battle, or using a Mamiya/Irako item. Both are slower or cost a limited item, so 1-1 is the usual method.
06

Common Mistakes

  1. 1Sortieing the same fleet over and over. Every sortie costs −15 plus −3 per battle, so a fleet turns orange after about two back-to-back runs.
  2. 2Expecting ships to sparkle by resting. Natural recovery stops at 49 — sparkle only comes from battles, exercises or food items.
  3. 3Sending a tired ship on an expedition. Orange or red at the result screen means failure and no resources.
  4. 4Checking morale without going back to the home port. The faces don't update until you return there.
  5. 5Remodeling a sparkled ship right before an expedition. Remodeling resets morale to 40.

FAQ

How long does it take to recover from a red face?

Natural recovery is +3 every 3 minutes, up to 49. The red face goes away at 20, and full recovery takes about 30 more minutes from there — up to about 50 minutes from the very bottom. Repairing the ship in the dock sets anything below 40 to 40 when repair finishes.

Does sparkle wear off over time?

No — morale above 49 doesn't drop just from waiting. It only goes down from sorties, battles and expeditions.

Do I need sparkles for expeditions?

Not to succeed, but for a great success most expeditions need every ship sparkling. See the great success rules.

Why does my ship look sparkled but still feel unlucky?

Each daytime battle starts with −3 morale, so a ship at 50–52 drops below the sparkle band when the fight begins and loses the bonus. Aim for well above 52.
