Conclusion
The way I read the remodel tables, the order is simple: give every ship you use its first remodel (Kai) as soon as you can — it's cheap and the jump is big — then put your EXP into Kai Ni remodels that unlock at a low level and need no blueprint.
Save blueprints (4 medals each) for remodels that change how a ship plays, and don't spend them early on ships you may not use.
Step 1: Kai for Everything You Use
| Ship type | First remodel (Kai) level |
|---|---|
| Destroyers | 20 (most) |
| Light cruisers | 20 (most; some earlier) |
| Heavy cruisers | 25 (most) |
| Light carriers | 25 (most) |
| Standard carriers | 30 (most) |
| Battleships | Kongou class 25, Nagato class 30 |
“Most” because some ships differ. The remodel screen shows the exact level for each ship.
Step 2: Early Kai Ni With No Blueprint
| Ship | Kai Ni level | Type | Why it stands out |
|---|---|---|---|
| 那珂 (Naka) | 48 | Light cruiser | The earliest Kai Ni; a solid destroyer-squadron flagship |
| 五十鈴 (Isuzu) | 50 | Light cruiser | Strong anti-submarine ship — useful for sub-heavy maps and quests |
| 北上・大井 (Kitakami, Ooi) | 50 | Torpedo cruiser | Huge opening torpedo strikes; Kai at Lv10 already makes them torpedo cruisers |
| 夕立 (Yuudachi) | 55 | Destroyer | A big night-battle damage dealer |
| 時雨・潮 (Shigure, Ushio) | 60 | Destroyer | High evasion/luck (Shigure) and ASW (Ushio) |
| 川内・神通 (Sendai, Jintsuu) | 60 | Light cruiser | Good flagships for destroyer squadrons |
| 衣笠 (Kinugasa) | 55 | Heavy cruiser | The earliest heavy cruiser Kai Ni |
| 木曾 (Kiso) | 65 | Torpedo cruiser | Becomes a torpedo cruiser at Kai Ni |
| 金剛型 (Kongou class) | 75 (Haruna 80) | Fast battleship | Fast battleships — no blueprint for the first Kai Ni |
| 飛龍・蒼龍 (Hiryuu, Souryuu) | 77 / 78 | Carrier | Carrier Kai Ni with no blueprint |
Each one has to go through its Kai stage first. Levels are from the wiki's remodel table.
How I'd Think About Priority
- Level cost first. Going from 50 to 75 takes far more EXP than going from 20 to 50, so a Kai Ni at 48–60 pays off much sooner than one at 75+. See the EXP calculator.
- Role second. A strong ASW ship or torpedo cruiser fills a gap your fleet probably has early on; a fourth similar destroyer doesn't.
- Blueprints last. Medals come slowly (up to 7 a month), and the wiki counts 103 blueprints needed across all ships. Spend them on ships you know you'll use for a long time.
- Expedition ships are the exception. Remodeling raises fuel and ammo use, and some ships change type. It's fine to keep a few destroyers and light cruisers unremodeled for expeditions.
FAQ
Is it ever bad to remodel?
Mostly only for expedition ships (higher costs) or when a quest or expedition needs the old ship type. For combat ships, remodeling is almost always the upgrade.
Which blueprint remodel should I do first?
It depends on your fleet, and there's no single right answer. A common approach is to pick a ship you'll use in many maps rather than a niche one.
Should I level a ship past its remodel level before remodeling?
There's no stat penalty either way — stats scale with level. Remodel when it's convenient (or when the ship is damaged, to get a free repair).
Where do I see a ship's remodel level?
In Refit (改装), select the ship; the remodel information shows the required level and items.
